I have a problem with the headlamps not raising with the light switch. When I switch the lights on the relay that raises and lowers the headlamps buzzes but doesnt operate, so the headlamps stay down. If I turn the lights off but then operate the flash the headlamps raise and pause before lowering again as normal. If I then switch the headlamps on while the headlamps are still raised from the flash they stay up. |

You have checked and cleaned the fuse connection - have you done the same for all the earthing. Each headlight wire earths to the body near the front? PLEASE help us to maintain a friendly forum, use Report post button if you see anything you are unhappy with. Thanks. |

To start with I'd do some basic checks; ![]() 1976 TR7 FHC (currently undergoing some TLC ...) 1980 TR7 DHC (a.k.a. Kermette, my first car bought in 1988 ) 1981 TR7 FHC (Sprint engined, a.k.a. 't Kreng) http://tr7beans.blogspot.com/ |

Quoted from Beans Hi Beans. It's a 1981. Do you know if there are any earth's from the relay/fuse panel? Also is it possible to get the relay and fuse panel out without removing the dash? |

I don't remember the details of the circuit (it's a good fifteen years since I owned a 7) but if the relay earth is shared with the sidelights (and not properly earthed) it would explain your symptoms. With the fuse removed, the LH side lights are unpowered. Current through the relay winding can flow back up through the front side-light and down the rear one to a good earth. With the fuse in, the top of the front sidelight is powered, so this earth path is not available. When you flash the headlights, the sidelights are not turned on, so the situation is the same as without a fuse.

Quoted from RobPearce Hi Rob, I don't think it's likely that the front sidelights share an earth with the relay as they are too far apart but your post does raise an interesting point because the fuse I remove to get it working does the nearside side and tail light and the dash lights. This must be key because the fuse for the offside does not have the same effect but the live to the fuses for each side are fed directly from the master light switch. So maybe the earth fault is related to the dash light earth's . These are obviously much closer to the relay/fuse panel which makes your scenario much more likely. I think you have potentially helped me make a step forward. I can try disconnecting the panel lights from the dimmer rheostat now! Incidentally the relay doesn't seem to have an earth of its own. It receives permanent live from the live side of the master light switch to its solenoid coil. But the other side goes to the pektron unit. The pektron unit therefore must have an earth but the Haynes diagram doesn't show one. However the diagram in this post https://club.triumph.org.uk/cgi-bin/forum10/Blah.pl?m-1352379828/ shows the pektron unit is earthed. Too cold to go out and check the car now but I think the Haynes is wrong. If the pektron unit shares an earth with the dash lights then bingo it must be that earth that's dodgy. 😀 |

On an 1981 model there's an earth point close to the fusebox, on the inside of the A-post. This is on a LH drive car, so in your case mirror this image ... ![]() 1976 TR7 FHC (currently undergoing some TLC ...) 1980 TR7 DHC (a.k.a. Yep that's pretty conclusive that it's not possible to get at the relay/fuse panel properly without removing the dash. I think 😠|

For the MOT you can always disconnect the headlamps motors and raise them manually before you drive to the MOT station. ![]() 1976 TR7 FHC (currently undergoing some TLC ...) 1980 TR7 DHC (a.k.a. Interesting development, I switched the dash lights off using the dimmer rheostat, headlights worked perfectly, switch them back on relay buzzes and headlamps don't lift. I am fairly convinced its a shared earth now, probably shared between the pektron unit and the dash lights. This weekends job will be to go hunting for the earth for the dash lights. |
