I've moaned before about poor quality Smiths heater valve copies.  I was displeased a year or so back when number 3 in as many years let go and bought a valve from the US that is a popular swap on TR6s.  Nice simple effective part that is cheap and easy to get in the US, though rather harder to get over here at reasonable cost due to shipping, tax and tax on the shipping.

Space being short in that corner of a Vitesse, not helped by one or two other mods on my car, I failed to do the mod at the time and bought another Smiths copy valve.

This also failed recently so I decided this time I would solve the problem permanently.  This has involved some mods to the heater matrix, which turned out to be leaking a bit anyway, but only to the extent of adding angled stubs.  I had to let our local radiator mender finish that in the end as I was having a nightmare with old solder melting before new and the whole thing dropping apart.  He did a nice job too.

He also noted that the divided end had become undivided over the years as the end bowed so much of the flow had been short-cutting the matrix, and this, added to the fact that the new valve gives a real open passage when open, means I'm getting true output from the heater for the first time ever.

Also, I can now pull the control knob out without putting both feet against the dashboard (ok, I exaggerate a little...)

I'm calling it a win.

Nick

Well done Nick. Fit and forget.

Thanks John. I certainly hope so!  It's been a recurring PITA for quite a few years.

Swapped out the bottom hose which was cracking up badly (though not old), flushed the radiator and block, then refilled with fresh anti-freeze.  Cooling system now builds and holds pressure for the first time in ages!

Nick
