hello peeps
wonder if you can help I have a standard 1200 (64) car runs fine no rattles knocks etc ... but when I switch off the carb seems to leak fuel into the engine and leak onto the manifold ... when running no leaks .. rebuilt the carb new fuel bowl valves etc etc .. but still the same any ideas ... its always done it ... when you walk away after a run you get a stronge smell of fuel ... driving me mad ..

The point of a float chamber is that it sets a hydrostatic pressure (height) of fuel at the jet.  If fuel is leaking from the jet when you switch off then float chamber overfull.    Blocked float valve?  Works like the ball cock o your loo.  Electric fuel.pump set too high?

that's what I thought too ... non electric pump will check again the valve and float ... thanks

When you switch off and the fuel stops flowing, the fuel in the float chambers warms and expands.  It can't get back through the needle valve so it overflows through the main jet into the carb throat.  This appears to be an expected trait as the 1200 manifold has a drain pipe......

Worth checking float height as a high fuel level would make it more prone to doing this.

You also occasionally come across carbs with slightly porous castings that weep fuel through from float chamber to carb throat.  Has a 205 like that years ago.

I'd expect to see it when running as well, but it would still be worth checking the accelerator pump diaphragm. These can split and do tend to leak fuel onto the manifold.

Perculation,  come across a lot of this duriing testing back in the 70,80s  often down to heat and venting

do check the suggestions, amd also the small holes in the top face of the carb are clear down to the jet zones and  exits near the throttle plate.
make sure the float chamber is venting and the drain tube has a small jetted hole in its end

is the fuel coming up out of the correction tube jet  or from the slow running circuit down by the throttle ?
