Hi All,

Having recently inherited my Granny's '61 Herald (as per Bent Rocker Cover thread), I'm now coming to the next item on the agenda. Servicing the Carb. It's currently running rich enough to risk giving you a headache if driving too long with the windows closed, and so rich my wife is not keen for our 5 month old boy to have his first ride in the Herald yet. So the pressure is on as far as I'm concerned to service it quickly! Can't wait to take him in it, even though he won't appreciate it yet!

I've been helpfully informed on the earlier thread that it may be a Solex B30 ZIC-3, so I thought I'd start a new thread and chart my progress. I've had some helpful information so far, particular thanks to Caspar and have ordered the following as advised, but appreciating the jetting info may be wrong, so I guess I'll need to find out correct info on that later.

I've also noted on the image of the carb below (excuse the muck - more of an identifying shot at present) that one bolt & washer appear to be missing - part no.s 11 & 39 according to this exploded diagram: http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/SolexCarbs/ZenithSP174.htm

So I'm wondering if that might be the initial cause for the richness. I don't pretend to have an understanding yet of what that bolt is responsible for and the significance of it being missing but I'm looking forward to working it all out. I'll try and update the thread as we go along as I've not yet figured out how to start a blog on this website yet, but think it would be a nice way to document my progress with the Herald with help from my brother (who started the Bent Rocker Cover).

Is it in fact a ZIC-3 ?
Take the air filter off  (it needs checking/replacing anyway and could possibly be the cause of rich running if it's very clogged) and clean up the carb.  The Model type is stamped, normally on a raised boss, on the fuel reservoir.  A brass wire brush, together with perhaps carb cleaner should identify whether the carb is a ZIC-3 or ZIC-5.  The reason they stamped them was that more than one model used the same casting.  It is therefore possible that 39 and it's washer were for plugging an unused part of the casting for the ZIC-3 version.

BTW, the base of the air filter housing is particular to those (relatively) few cars with 30 ZIC's.  The top of the B30 PSE1 is a good deal larger.

C.
