How do I identify my gearbox?
My 13/60 based Moss Malvern has "P153" on the gearbox. A spare gearbox I have has "C170" on it.
Neither code seems to match 'box ID info I can find one the www........any thoughts?

The serial number is (should be) stamped on the exposed bit of the top face of the main casting, where the top housing has a cut-away. Unless your gearbox is not a Herald one. Post photos and we may be able to help.

The gearbox in the car has a serial number scratched out & a new one stamped on which reads "GR39340"
A recon. 'box maybe?

The spare gearbox has the number FD60652.

Cool, thanks, this interweb things pretty good huh?!

Looking again at the 'box in the car, it seems to be a recon. Vitesse "HB" gearbox which surprised me...did the 6-cyl engines have the same gearbox (or shell, at least) then?

Would the internals of my spare box, being from a Mk3 Spitfire, make it a better box?

Vitesse HB box is from a 1600, and thus a 3 synchro box similar to Heralds and Sptifires up to Mk3. The gears are different due to different ratios but the other parts, including the casing are the same.
