First of all a simple question, I am certain I know the answer is 'no' but here goes.
Would a petrol cap from another make, (MG, Morris etc) fit a Herald 13/60? I would be interested in a locking chrome/stainless one.
I have the original non locking one fitted and am going to keep it on as I like it very much.

I also have a chrome locking one, which must be old as the chrome is of excellent quality that I would like to repair, there is a key, a P.Journee J010, which fits in the lock but doesn't work. Having dismantled the whole unit there is no manufacturers name, reference or whatever to help identify it. The pins move freely so to me it is a matter of determining the correct key pattern.

I am going to contact a local locksmith and try to get him to understand that I want him to either cut a key to fit the existing lock, my preferred option, or replace the barrel for one that will fit the cap. He will probably say that only a mad Englishman would want to spend money trying to recreate an old key for a car that is nearly 50 years old, I can live with that.

Very efficient, very helpful and cheap.  Don't know whether they will be able to help in your case but maybe worth a try.

I think the Herald and Vitesse are about the only cars that have a petrol cap with three lugs?   Most seem to have two.

Casper: I've used Keytrader in the past for additional keys but that was for keys that I know the reference for, this time I don't and that is the problem.

Marktheherald: Exactly what I thought, trust these two to be different

This is true unfortunately.  Dolomite also have three and possibly TR7 but the latter look fairly radically different.

They do still come up on Ebay from time to time.  I was lucky enough to score a NOS one from Cyprus a few years ago - I have been looking a while though.

Understood.  Nevertheless, they may be able to help.  I know you say there are no markings but if the key you have fits, that at least gives them a start.  They really try.

This morning I was cleaning up the Inside of the cap after taking the mechanism out and part of the inner ring broke   so it is no longer a repair job. I will keep an eye out for a locking cap on the Bay etc, I want a locking version as a back up. I am quite happy with the non locking one on a daily basis as I can't really see petrol being stolen when the car is parked up locally, for one thing it is farly well known due to a couple of articles in the local paper and magazine (no not for speeding) the bigger risk could be small fingers taking a shine to it as a trophy.

If you want a locking filler cap for odd occasions, Rimmers sell a black (plastic ?) locking cap for the Herald. Cheers, Dave.

First Triumph: 200cc Tiger Cub. Followed by in no particular order, 350 and 500 Royal Enfield Bullet, Herald 1200, Herald 13/60, Mini 1275 GT, Vitesse 2L convertible, Audi 80, Audi 80 Sport, Fiat 124 Sport Coupe, Triumph 2000, Mk 2 Estate, Fiat Tipo, Fiat Stilo, Fiat Uno, Peugeuot Turbo Diesel(yuk), Lancia HPE 2000ie (wow! a dream!) So far 3 Heralds and My fourth Vitesse in the garage. I may have forgotten some... It's my age.. Oh , Honda 400 four.. Terrifying! And the 2 Renault 5s. Yes I know I have looked at it BUT...
Mrs Me has  far too much good taste to allow me to fit it, even if the car was hidden under a cover, overnight in a snow storm.

I take your point...however it's only 70mm in diameter so it's reasonably unobtrusive, unlike some of the huge hexagonal monstrosities that were available in the 1960s and 70s. Cheers, Dave.

Yes I know but as you say 'some', so I'll try for one of the other period ones and anyway size isn't important allegedly.
Chrome will shout less than black.

You win😂 Maybe not...

In fact I've just come to an arrangement to buy a nice SHINY CHROME one from Alex, which is great for me and  I hope he won't regret it in the future.

This is aperfect example of how a forum should be. A bit of banter, some advice, an exchange of ideas and a helping hand.
