I am looking for the finishing touches now and these seem to be eluding me.
It seems the spit/gt6 type with the 22? Holes around the centre are coming up more often on ebay these last couple of weeks.

It's not these I am looking for, it's the smooth centre barrel type I am wanting.

Now did this style only have a small production run as there seems to be little or no info about them.

I note the saloon amongst us is wearing a set and that looks awesome.

Which cars had these so I can search the classifieds in the hope of finding some.

Also as a guide what sort of price should I be looking For.

Thanks

Good luck !

They do come up occasionally, but they are sought after, and there are more people looking for a set than selling...

I've no idea how much they go for - £400-500 for a set? Really depends how many people are after the same set.

I sold some a few years ago for what I thought was cheeky money, but agreed, a good set of wheels (check for straightness, many have bent rims that are not obvious but the whole wheel is a bit twisted!) probably £300 plus.
However, they are VERY nice.
Just keep searching, they are the sort of thing that may just turn up at an autojumble, or you hear of a set for sale by word of mouth.

I was very lucky and managed to set a set of fully reconditioned ones for a little over $600NZD from a classic Formula Ford. All via word of mouth and thanks to this forum - they are out there. Just put the word out and sooner or later a set will become available. Took me about two years.

Don't forget that, whilst it sounds like a lot, when you compare it to the price that you pay for aftermarket alloys, you're in the same ball-park for something that's a whole load more exclusive and (in my opinion) looks a whole load better. If I had a Herald, Vitesse, early Spit or GT6, I'd happily pay over £500 for a set.

Cost is not the issue.....its finding a set.
I've looked getting a standard set banded to achieve a similar look.
Either way I'll running steels.

I'd given up all hope of ever getting a set, then someone on here told me of someone who was taking a set to stoneleigh to sell. One very quick phone call and the chap delivered them to me on his way to stoneleigh. I was going to buy a set of minilights at stoneleigh so if I'd found out about the steelies the next day I wouldn't have had the money to buy them.
As others have said keep asking around they do come up

Good job Adam. The LP923s you managed to buy were the only ones I'd heard of for sale in NZ or Australia in the last five years. Hopefully there are more lying around, perhaps in the corners of sheds, in the hands of owners that don't realise the market for them.

Look on the bright side, after a while you will have enough bricks to build a garage to keep the car in.

Well, I'm after some of these too. If ANYONE ever hears of some then a PM would be really appreciated.
Long shot but Weller wheels say they'd consider making a run of 30 identical sets. Is anyone interested.....?

I kept looking out for some, and then I see the weller wheels do the lotus cortina ones, (mmmm gorgeous) but as we all know different p.c.d. So at that time I looked to see if they made others.

If they did a run of them, how much would they charge! that would be the issue! Although they would be new and damage free!
I would be interested, My other option was to get my skinnys banded to 5.5.

The wellers would be the same type, solid ones not ones with holes round the wheel like the later gt6?

Thanks for the info, keep us updated.

Cheers

Do weller class a set as 5?

That's what I would want. Surely there should be a bigger market for them than 30 sets,
The Amount of people looking for a set!!!
Spit, herald etc, some specials, and isn't one of the lotus small cars the same p.c.d? So there could be a bigger market.

Cheers

Looks like there's two on the rear of this locost.... ebay item 111382852083 Front wheels are Ford hubs as the alloys are Capri Mk2 Ghia but the stud spacing on the rear wheels looks smaller than Ford and they don't have the slots round the edge of the dish as in Lotus Cortina. I'm sure they are LP923's.
He might let them go separately - you never know.......

I would say they are lotus rims on the rear. It has a ford 105 rear axle!

In the description he says it is all triumph front suspension, discs and hubs? So what are those wheels from? They do look similar to the Capri style alloys though.

I make 30 sets as 4 x 30 = 120 wheels

Nick

120 wheels is a pretty small run considering the size of the Triumph community.

Any idea of cost?

Not a bad looking wheel, it's the deep dish of the o/e wheel I am really looking for.

Have had a contact from a possible seller, just in the hands of others at the moment.

Hi Guys,

My boss at work is one of the owners of Weller wheels and we've been in discussion about these wheels for a while now.

Just to confirm a few things;
- The batch size hasn't been confirmed yet (but I've pretty sure its going to be more than 30 sets!)
- The wheels are going to have a dual PCD. one rim will fit both 3 3/4" & 4"
- The rims widths available will be 5.5J, 6J and 7J

Hope this makes things a little clearer.

Jordan

p.s. Any questions you want me to ask my Boss just let me know.

Dual pcd?

So do you mean it will have 8 holes?
Personally i would want them as original. Can they not offer the option of both pcd (I.e. 4 holes in the wheel) I know it n
Means making 2 types but think there will be more demand if they are as original.

You could always weld up the other four?

Acclaim - fully working and on the road
13/60 Herald - mx5 powered and other such fun things, legal enough...
Mk1 2000 - it's still alive, just sleeping
Expert 815d - the slug

If in doubt, do up until you hear the crack and then go another 1/4 turn to ensure tightness.

They are not going to be "exact" replicas, more of an imitation (offering the basic fundamentals but not being exactly the same e.g. they don't have the slots).

They will be similar to this example of the Minor 5 1/2J;
http://www.wellerwheels.com/shop/productdetails.aspx?id=71

Example with hubcap (Lotus Cortina);

Dual PCD means they can produce the wheels to fit Triumph and VW / Vauxhall  stud pattern to increase the market demand so the batches will be larger and the final cost lower. If there's a hubcap over the studs the dual PCD is not seen anyway so then only a purist would notice the difference. And as Heralds never had 5.5's anyway it's a moot point. Also it is often mentioned that the Dunlop 923's used to buckle easily so the Weller wheel should be stronger as it is up to modern spec and not subject to 40+ years of wear, abuse and corrosion.
Of course IF you can find any 923's.......that's the biggest point!

I like those wheels. I have a set of the Dunlop 5.5 wheels and on my GT6 Mk2 they rubbed on the rear arches. I had the same problem with the later style 5.5. I think they are ET16. Currently I have Wolfrace wheels that came on the car years ago which i have never liked, but since fitting yokohama 165 70 tyres I have problems with the rear tyres rubbing.

Do you have any clearance issues with the Mattig wheels with the rear arches? How much are they?

Thanks

Hi,
no clearance issues at the rear arches.
However, at the front. Slightly at the wheelarches and slightly at the bulkhead. Bulkhead sorted with some soft beats with the "Birmingham adjuster".
Whellarches sorted with having no shims under the  brackets for the lower wishbone and an adjustable upper wishbone from CC. Appr 1 degree negative chamber.

Well here we go folks. The moment of truth.Looking for the stamp on these was my priority to verify they are in fact Dunlop 5.5j wheels.

Looking good so far

now I am a happy bunny! Can't believe my luck, they even have 4 new toyo tyres.

A full refurb now is to be carried out to compliment the new paint on the car . Also want to get my hub caps re chromed.

qed,
Sorry to rain on your parade, but how does "L8(?)923" make them 5.5Js?

Measure the things!!
Here's a pic of the crude but effective pair of calipers I made from wood laths with nails fied in the tips that I made for measuring rims.   Allow a little extra for the thickness of the metal.

And look for "5.5J" on them, which is what mine have.
"5.5 x 13 x 16"  The "16" refers to the 16 holes.
and
the Dunlop sign with "1144"

The part number for 5.5J Dunlop wheels is LP923. I refer you to Canley's website :

http://triumphmuseum.blogspot.co.uk/2009/01/dunlop-wheels.html

- the page for Dunlop Formula D2 wheels shows them listed.

Good evening to you too.Alittle aggressive in your second line.
If you would be so kind as to calm down and perhaps read the previous posts or even use Google to do some research you'll find that the smooth type Lp923 has this stamped on the barrel and your more common and less desired wheel is in fact totally different.
My parade is still intact and will March on just fine.

Oval hole steels IMHO look better on 70's Triumphs plus 13/60s and MKll Vitesses and hubcap steels on 60's Triumphs but just my view....

Different opinions are fine,if everyone liked the same things the world would be very boring.

Looking for some centre caps I've come across some that look almost flat,ie no recesse for centre decal.(like the one fitted above)

Is the one fitted correct?

Are you serious John?

So the Dunlop 1217 has 22 holes
and the Dunlop 957 has .88 holes.

the last number is the offset IIRC. In the case of Johns wheel, 16 (mm?)

there is more than one offset of the oval hole wheels out there......

So you know the saying about waiting for a bus etc etc
Well the other night while talking to a mg owner he happened to mention that in error he had bought some wire wheels for a triumph.well to cut along story short I bought them.
Wire wheels were the next option after the Dunlops,so I've now decided to go with the wires.
After waiting so long for the steels then the wires turning up to I've had to make a choice.
The problem now is what to price the steels at as there's non to compare prices to.
That's were you come in,there complete with tyres and hub caps ready to fit.

So what's a good price folks??

Here's a set I just picked up for NZ$355.  They need stripped back and repainted but otherwise seem very straight etc.

Now I just need to find a car to put them on.  Apparently that's harder to do than finding the wheels.

NZ$355 sounds very cheap, well done!

What sort of vehicle do you want to attached them to? (serious question)

Hi Peter.  It was looking at your car at Southwards Open Day that made me aware these wheels even exist, just interesting timing that a set popped up on trademe.

I've been looking for a Mk2 GT6 for about 6 months.  Plenty of Mk3s around but I prefer the more 60s styling.

They did come out of Palmy.  I picked them up from his car port and didn't see in the garage so I'm not sure whether there was a Datsun in there.  apparently he used to have a 1600 Vitesse that he's since sold.

Yeah will be the same guy I had been trying to buy them off for a member on this forum.

He couldn't decide if he wanted to sell, then the price kept going up to $700NZD, so gave up in the in the end. Glad they have found a good home.

Hi, I found a set of these a while ago and am planning to get them blasted and painted this week so ive had a look at them today and noticed ive got two stamped LP923 (although one has got it stamped in the usual place and one has it stamped on the inside of the rim)

And the other pair have this stamped on the inside of the rim with no mention of Dunlop or LP923 anywhere

Anyone know anything about these are they later aftermarket copies or something?

Cheers Andy

There seems to be 2 types, the later like mine with no real gap between the barrel and rim and the early type with about 1" gap between/in between the 4 spoke/weld points.

The early type have been in the past mentioned as being factory fitted and the latter as optional extras.
Early type,factory fitted

Late type,optional extra

This of course could be incorrect,as always info on the Internet is only as good (or accurate) as the person who inputted it.

The wheel with the larger gap will not clear the brake caliper, whereas the one with the smaller gap will. When I bought four I found that I had two of each type so had to fit the ones with the larger gap on the rear of the car.

Really,that's good to know.
I did hear at a show that it had been questioned if the top wheel was in fact just some stock left over and someone flipped the barrel,so in fact the front is the back/rear of the rim, hence the poor clearance.

Your one photo

shows RO&CO., which I am going to guess refers to Rubery Owen. I was not aware that RO made wheels for Standard-Triumph (I know that Sankey was the usual "other" supplier of Triumph wheels), so it might be worth ensuring that the PCD on the RO-stamped wheels is indeed the 95.25mm/3.75" small Triumph pattern?

I'm sure somebody mentioned about the possibility before but nothing came of it...I'm selling a set of banded steels that I had that I used as a sort of stop gap...look pretty good but the step is near the outer rim as opposed to near the barrel.

Being as I'm having to revisit everything on the car that was bodged by the garage I've got the lp's blasted and powered coated, look brilliant and am glad now I didn't go with the banded steels.

Could we start a gallery of owners wheels? Think this thread gets a lot of hits/views and info with images is a nice touch.

Start a new thread to make it easier to follow? I've photos of mine on Sprint and Alley Cat wheels.

Thread Drift: Hutch is still around, his Mk1 GT6 was partially rebuilt by James Cooper last year, great little car.

Club Triumph Round Britain Reliability Run (Part of the organising team, what a team)!
RBRR is the best car event in the UK, not probably, it is!

1970 GT6 Mk.2: Royal Blue 6 RBRRs (98, 00,02,04,06 & 10), 2 10CRs (03 & 07). 2 HCRs 1 LCC, lots of Autosolos and numerous track days. Bought in 1983, crikey where did the time go! Now running the Roy Lacey cooling system!

1969 2.5Pi Mk.1: Slate Grey 3 10CRs (05,09 & 15), 3 RBRRs (08, 12 & 16), 3 HCRs, 2 LCCs. A few alloy panels, does need the pi kit fitting. Bought April '04. Needs paint! Just fitted some new 7J Minilites-not copies!

1967 Spitfire mk2: Wedgewood Blue. Bought November 2010. Almost seems civilised. Car has done a RBRR (Dave Picton 2010). Blimey, could be on the road soon!
