Hi Ya Folks,

I was just wondering, on what chassis number did triumph stop the option of the Contrasting black or white stripe on the Vitesse models?

Also Curiously, my Vitesse Mk1 has 3.5J 145 80 13 tyres rims and tyres (I know its supposed to have 4.5J x 155 13), however two of them have wider slots than the other two?? When did the slot sizes change?

Hi Jordan,

Both saloon and convertible Vitesse 6 (1600) models were available with a side flash which was a tapering spear down the sides, this incorporated the headlamp surounds and included the grille surround panel.  I don't recall ever seeing any 2 Litre cars officially built with the stripe and certainly it was never available from the factory on MKll cars.  Like the Herald 1200, I think the duotone colour schemes were phased out during 1966, just leaving a residue of duotone 12/50's filtering into 1967.  Like the 2 Litre Vitesse, the 13/60 was also never officially available with either duotone paint or a side flash.  I personally don't like the retro added stripes on later Vitesses and on earlier cars where the wrap-around bit on the front has been omitted, just looks incomplete.  I also think that adding the stripes on Heralds looks odd too, although I am not adverse to duotone schemes on 948 and 1200-12/50s.  Then again I am a traditionalist.  I once saw a Gold Vitesse saloon with a Silver "sandwich" done in the way that a Herald duotone scheme is done, and I have to say that it did look striking, not to my taste though.

Sounds like your Vitesse has Herald wheels fitted, two of the earlier type.  I never can remember which are earlier, narrow or wider slots....

As to the wider-slot (earlier, and there are actually two different versions of these) wheels, I would hazard a guess that they were phased out sometime around 1966, but I really can't verify that. Bill? others? I will say that I don't recall seeing any 4.5" wide-slot wheels, but....

Be useful for someone to post a pic of each, side by side so I can see the difference!

Pretty interesting stuff mark and andy! How such minor details change over the years on our cars

Mine is one of the later Mk1's, 9000 out of 12000 or something like that. As i'm eventually going to respray my car its original colour, Cherry Red, i was wondering whether or not to add a black stripe and front, (See the picture below   )

I'll take my trims of today and snap some photo's

Also, My Vitesse has a rev counter with no or little orange section and a large red section. However, i've also got two other vitesse rev counters, except they have larger orange sections and large red sections too, on what cars did they change the rev counter printing on? (Photo's to come   )

My 13/60 Convertible has a stripe or flash on the side and I love it. I think they look nice in the right colour, but some are a little wrong. I think it's down to owner preference though, but with all the little differences on these cars it makes them individual and therefore special.

Narrow slot wheels (3 1/2") from GA164781 in Nov 1964, but I expect the usual long changeover.

Check your back issues of the Courier, Mark (if you haven't thrown them away on leaving!)
Bill did a really good article on wheels about a year before he jumped ship.  Sadly, its not one that I keep in my 'ready reference' files so I can't point you to it.

Funny thing is Con, I haven't actually left.  I just don't get involved anymore.  I retained membership because with the insurance discount it effectively paid for membership.

Like Stu, I think they are quite acceptable on the right car. I have a stripe on mine when it shouldn't be there. It goes onto the headlamp surrounds but not round the grille. It looks ok and it's simply there as the previous owner put it on, it looks good but when I respray it, it'll be left off to see what it looks like. Mine also has Triumph letters on the bonnet, again a legacy from the PO, changeable, but I can live with it for now.

Mine is a Vitesse 6, Cactus green with a black stripe that covers the MKI bonnet grille area....presuming this is how it is meant to be..

The Red and Black car in the photo above belongs to Clive Bergman, and that is the correct scheme.

I'd say Signal Red with a black flash, but could be Cherry (can't see enough of it)...
