Trying to make this the longest running thread in the history of the board.   To recap: I posted here in 2004.  The car was found almost immediately, but had moved to New Zealand with John Kipping.  The car arrived back in the UK in 2008, I visited it...and then it sat and sat and sat.

the news is...

I was in the UK last week, so I went up to Canley Classics and saw Dave and the car.  I've provided a deposit, and Dave has agreed to begin the restoration in the new year.  We're going to go back to original (at some point in the late 80s someone fitted a 1300 motor to it).  I just dug out the heritage certificate, which says that it had disc brakes from new - so that's nice.

Getting really excited now.

I share your enthusiasm.  My Herald was owned by my grandfather then my mother after his death and now me since 1980.  I had my car restored by Chic Doig.  There is nothing like a living piece of family history such as an old car that you can remember for most of your life, if you get my drift.....
Good luck!

Hi there,

I got the first three pictures of the tear down.  I'm pretty non-technical, so I describe it as "it's a car that doesn't look like  a car any more".

Will keep you all posted!

Cheers,
Ben

...I think I've asked this before but does galvanising risk warping the Triumph 'small-chassis'? If not, for what it costs, it would be well worth considering...

You can always cold galvanise. Once you have shot blasted to bare metal you can paint with Galvafroid. Its not cheap but its is an exceptionally high quality ZINC based paint. I used two coats.

...Won't protect the inside of the chassis, though like 'hot-dip' galvanising - replacement  L. Rover chassis' tend to be galvanised but they are, of course, a fair bit heftier...

For the inside we used waxoyl. Drilled about 4 3/8" holes and sprayed it in. Capped the holes with grommets so there is future access to give another dose of waxoyl.

Well, I was in the UK last week, running an errand, so I took a ride up to the Midlands to see how it's all going.

There are some pictures that I'll post, but first I want to say that I am completely convinced that Dave and the team at Canley Classics are the perfect people for this job.  Not only that there's some history with this car - the link with John Kipping, the work Dave did to the car in the mid 80s - but because I just know that Dave is doing it right.  I can't imagine a more knowledgable person, and I see the meticulous, intricate....obsession with getting things right.  Couldn't be happier.
