I'm looking for some help.  I'm looking for a particular car.  It was bought new by my Godmother, a wonderful human being.  She owned it for about 20 years.  I was interested in cars from an early age, and she decided that she'd give it to me for my 17th birthday.  Unfortunately, she lost her sight when I was about 7, and thought that keeping the car for ten years was impractical.  She later told me that she regretted that.  She died a couple of years ago.

I'd like to buy the car, and restore it to its former glory, as a tribute to her, and to belatedly fulfil her wish for me to have it.

Now, I've been told that the car hasn't been scrapped, but that's all I can find out.  I sent a letter to the DVLA asking them to inform the current keeper that I'd be interested in buying it, but I don't know if they will forward it or not.

Anyone got any ideas how I can find the car?

Should I post the registraion number?  (I already searched the whole forum, and got no hits).

Cheers,
Ben

Try emailing our registrar Nick Jackson (registrar@club.triumph.org.uk). He'll be able to tell you if it's owned by a club member, or if it has been recently.

I think that you will need to spread your net to locate the car.
Prob. a good idea to use the other Triumph owners club's as well.

Also stick the reg. no up on this site.

Club Triumph Round Britain Reliability Run (Part of the organising team, what a team)!
RBRR is the best car event in the UK, not probably, it is!

1970 GT6 Mk.2: Royal Blue 6 RBRRs (98, 00,02,04,06 & 10), 2 10CRs (03 & 07). 2 HCRs 1 LCC, lots of Autosolos and numerous track days. Bought in 1983, crikey where did the time go! Now running the Roy Lacey cooling system!

1969 2.5Pi Mk.1: Slate Grey 3 10CRs (05,09 & 15), 3 RBRRs (08, 12 & 16), 3 HCRs, 2 LCCs. A few alloy panels, does need the pi kit fitting. Bought April '04. Needs paint! Just fitted some new 7J Minilites-not copies!

1967 Spitfire mk2: Wedgewood Blue. Bought November 2010. Almost seems civilised. Car has done a RBRR (Dave Picton 2010). Blimey, could be on the road soon!

I look after some of the Herald records for another Triumph club. If the car in question is a 948 or 1200 I'll see if it shows in my records, but I have to say that enquiries like this are always a long shot. Nevertheless, keep trying everywhere you can,
Cheers,
Bill.

Ok - It's 596DXX.

I'll get off to the TSSC...

Thanks.

Cheers for that.  I've registered, and I'm just adding the car to the Wish List!

Bill - I'd appreciate it, thanks.

To my eternal shame I don't know what model it is.  I haven't been able to do much research yeat.  It must be quite an early car because its registration number is 596DXX - which makes it pre-1963 (?).

Erm... it's not a convertible - I'm sure of that!

I have a couple of scan photos, but stupidly I left them at home.  I'll nip back and put them on a CD and bring them to work and upload them.  (Just moved home, and don't have an internet connection yet).

I really appreciate all the replies.  Hopefully I can find the car - and then I'll be able to stick around and annoy you all with my restoration questions!

Cheers,
Ben

I found a scanned photo of the car, if anyone's interested.  I was sure I had two, though - and the filename seems to support that idea, but I've no idea where the other is.

What a great photo

It would be wonderful if the car was still around - good luck with the hunt

Just tried the RAC trace service - it didn't find the registration which implies the car is neither taxed or subject to SORN.

Thanks Raider - it's a little piece of my past that I'd like to get hold of and put into tip-top condition.  An ambition, I suppose.

<fx: fingers crossed>

I've been trying the RAC site every few weeks since I heard about it!

I've checked through my records and unfortunately it doesn't show up. The car in question is a Herald 1200 Coupe. Registration records show that the number 596DXX "was made available" in 1962, though that alone wouldn't confirm the year of registration, some numbers were not issued to vehicles until a couple of years after they were first made available. There is a further clue in that the front valance looks like an early pattern which was deleted in June 1962, so it's a safe bet that the car was registered sometime during 1962.
Good luck in tracking it down. Coupes are arguably the most desireable of all Heralds,
Cheers,
Bill.
